I see this song differently.

doesn't the author of this song accuse himself in the third person that what he says in his songs may not be true?

Either way you caught me with your lyin You caught me with your lyin You caught me with my pants down

In the two first verses I thinks he's saying: I'd like to change the world, so it would be more my way (kicking the door). But does he see all the facts, is his way really right? He's just a guy who parties all the time. And he is even glad that he doesn't know everything.

He'd like to show the kids that even through they think now what are they doing, they might not seen the full picture. The lyrics in the songs they listen to, don't show the truth, but the world seen by the person who writes them. But if he said it straight like I do, he'll just appear as a square to the "kids" and they would not listen to him, that's why he encourages to listen his song.

I guess that thought suggests the next line about his father, that he had a totally different life it seems, full of hardships, but in the end the author of the song doesn't like to listen to him as well, because he's old. And his life was totally different because he wasn't an artist. But the ironically the words of the father are worth more, because they come from someone who knows more about life then the author.

In his songs, in this one to be exact, his saying that he may sound like he knows about life, but in the end he does not, it might be just an illusion. The last lines are a metaphor of this:

We ain't even been to the ocean We been runnin barefoot through the street

This song is clearly an irony towards the the band and what they do. And shows that the guys are modest, and still walk with their two legs firmly stuck to the ground.
