To me it's always been a story like: He wrote a letter telling her how he feels, poured himself into it, and in the sent it to her. She doesn't bother to read it and sent it right back to him, hence the "marked Return to Sender" line... because when you get a letter you don't want, you don't even open it and just put it back in the box and write "RETURN TO SENDER" on it.
I love this song because he's like "ok, you don't give a shit about me, but I'm still filled with such an amazing feeling when I see you and we had something amazing together, so I'm letting go of my hurt over your actions/inaction, and just embracing that feeling when it comes and goes. I just wish you knew about it."
Very upbeat song about getting over someone, I think. Or trying to in good faith. :p
