Carole King asked her why she didn't leave him and she responded that he did it because he loved her so much. I think it's just her (Carole King's) observation of an abusive relationship. I don't really think the song is sick, just the concept it's describing; that someone can still love a person who hurts them like that. It wasn't intended to be encouraging spousal abuse but that's how some people took it.
