I really think this song is fairly strait forward although some disagree. To me it has always been about a guy who kills his brother and blames it on some other guy (who he later kills)

The motive : Throughout the beginning part of the song the lyrics and inflection make the singer very jelous of his brother....

"Mama loved him the best He was head honcho with the ladies Mama always said he was blessed"

The line "The people of the village believed me" implies that he fooled them. Why state "they belived me" if its true?

The linch pin of course is: "I tell you it was me who killed him But the truth I'll never have to say"

I mean that prety much says he killed him and now that he killed the guy he blamed it on hes scott free.

Just my 2 cents
