I dont agree with Silver. From the 1st lines u can see hes telling a friend, that he has fallen in love with her (something i think we all can relate to). The fact that hes "ordinary" is part of his apolagy to her in the sense that: hes just human, he knows he shouldnt express his feelings and ruin a friendship, especially as he points out, she doesnt want that [...admit what shes been afraid of... ...i know this is an unpleasant suprise...]. But he cant help the way he feels, and he gives in to them as an "ordinary" person would.
