I think than more than trying to fit into NY is more NY what fits him, and that's why he's moving out there, likely from a smaller, not as bustling place, where he might feel trapped. Ever heard anyone say that a town is too small for a person? It gives me the impression that is the case, because of the second paragraph: "Am I loosing touch or am I just completely off the track".
Besides his "Christmas came early..." obviously means a very big joy about the whole thing.
