I feel like there are really 3 different stories in this song, or at least 2. the first part, the 2 verses are about a pair of lovers, whether they be married or whatever, have a falling out and each feels it was their own fault and each tries to convince themself (not anybody else) that they are not the devil and that they are not evil, or what have you.
The second story is contained entirely in the bridge, and I believe it to be Aaron's story, to his wife possibly, saying that he took her for granted and he wants to make ammends for that and again he tries to convince himsef (possibly his wife or whomever this part of the song is written for also) that he is not the devil
also a couple side notes,
Tormented, i can see a drug reference in this song, not for sure cocain, but "sometimes when I medicate"...
and to cowchpotato, its not always a choice to be different. some people have no control over their differentness (if that's even a word)
