The philosopher Plato came up with the "allegory of the cave" in his Republic. He was trying to explain how people could still think and speak even if they were unaware of his Theory of Forms.

Basically, there are prisoners who are chained to a cave wall for all their lives. Behind them, there is a walkway of puppeteers, and behind this walkway is a fire, and behind that, the entrance to the cave. All these prisoners know are the shadows that the fire casts and the echoes taht these puppeteers make. The object they see is a reality for them, but people of the outside world know that whatever these prisoners think is real is really only a shadow of reality.

This explains some lyrics in the song: unveil this lie, the flickering of the shadows on the cave wall, hollow motives, silence as sound, the prisoners acquiring belief from what is only an empty display. i'm not explaining this very well, but that's the gist of it.
