Anarkiska is right about this one... its about decadence on tour, and what the touring life is really like behind the perfect image that every idiot kid has of a travelling musician. It talks about neglecting the life you have always known to go out and live like a dog, and how easy it is to lose everything you had back home (friends, lovers).

Anything about being cold or frozen; and seeing your breath is about being from Michigan. The reference to the 'mitten' in the chorus is also to their beloved state.

The second half of the chorus is an acknowledgment of an alcoholic nature... he thanks beer ("amber") for making his adventure in loneliness more tolerable.
