It comes across to me like he's frustrated with the girl trying to help him... Like he's saying "Okay... this isn't my fault... will you just stop, please? Stop trying to fix me." Especially because it doesn't appear to be her problem to fix. In the first verse, it's almost like he's mocking her: "I’ll make a change so that you want me more". And then he goes on to say: "Is this really my idea?" Eben when he says "It's true I failed/But your love covers me", he follows it with "Is this really my idea?".
I don't really think he loves her. I think he's too confused about himself to deal with anyone else.
