I don't know about the suicide thing but if you take the song at the 1st level: someone who is trying to cross the border to find happiness I think it's one of the Greatest song of Springsteen.
Beyond the figures and the debate about immigration, it just tell the story and the feeling of someone looking for happiness and who decide to find it across the border.
Isn't it the story of nearly all americans ? I'd say most of the americans (I know for black people and native indians it's different ...) come from famillies who decided to go in United States to find wealth and happiness. This song is so human. Immigration is 1st of all human being looking for happiness, like we all do.
