In my opinion (which could be wayyyyy off) I take this song to mean that there is someone (a friend or significant other) that is so insecure with themselves and feels like they don’t deserve anything from anyone. Because of these inner feelings towards themselves when people get close they give these people all they have and in return use them to use themselves, because that is psychologically want they believe they deserve. In the end they can fall back on the people using them to allow them not to get closer “is this the only reason that you
stay” I think is the lead singer confronting this person for what they are doing.
