ok so im guessing this song is about his earlier days of youth
when your in a moment your going to remember the rest of your life you never really know intill it over but then its to late and you just wish you can go back. and when he says you were the places i wanted to go , i think he means that it really does not matter where you go as long as your with that certain person, "we were the people we wanted to know" to me that comes across as just being young, rebelious just a kid haveing fun.
when he says "whimpering for someone to know" this is the most powerful line in the song i think. just crying and crying and just needing attention from anyone. really sad.
and when he says the thing about loving someone but never knowing, its like you dont know what you got till its gone kinda thing.
