I am a huge Rosie Thomas fan (since the first time I heard Pretty Dress). I feel that Charlotte is a simple, somber song, but pretty...and i like the lyrics. But the two don't seem to go together. The song is more story-like than her other songs, as there is an obvious plot - a start and a finish - and the storyline comes across clearly even after hearing the song for the first time. And the story is horrific - a woman is abused so badly by her husband that she shoots him in a rage, and her neighbor helps her cover it up by blaming it on suicide. It doesn't seem to match the background or Rosie's vocal dynamics, and there doesn't seem to be enough emotion in what she's explaining. I also don't see the relevance of the song - what is she trying to tell us? I don't see that there is anything outside of a pure "desperate housewives" type storyline.
Can anyone help me out?
