I thought the paddle part at the beginning was about fraternities that have dumbass initiation rituals like being hit on the ass with a paddle and saying "Thank you sir, may I have another?", relating it to people doing whatever they need to feel like they fit in. The rest of the song to me seems like no matter how different you try to be, you're always gonna have to conform a little:"On the bar stool, tryin' not to be, but it's hard to change." Sucks, but true. Big D kicks ass.
