I agree with you, and since something like that happened to me recently (one night i was chatting with my now ex gf, everything seemed like a normal night, till she said something wasnt allright).
Before that time i thought 3 AM could be something metaphorical like some months ago, but now i see I can take it literally. Things can go wrong so suddenly and this is what this song means to me. And whatever I did to try to fix things i couldnt, that's also included in the song. I couldnt see things like the singer did, and she let them root and grow, and when things went wrong there was no chance to remove those "bad" things that tore us apart.
