this song really reminds me of tom cruise's character in jerry maguire.
a man, who in his struggle to succeed with his career, forgets to live and is ultimately "strangled by years of indifference." he knows there is love in his life but he by no means goes to pursue it. "so patiently i wait here by the phone/for your call."
"i fought life/and i cannot lie"
he admits to fighting all of his emotions back and he realizes the situation he is in is entirely his fault, it's a "self inflicted open wound."
"you say that's life"
i guess that's the part in the movie where tom's character sees rod (cuba gooding jr.'s character) loudly proclaiming his love for his wife over the phone, is immediately inspired and realizes that he should go back home to his own wife. he realizes she has loved him always and that for once, he should try and combat his fear of intimacy.
"all i know/all i know is i'm hopeless/unless i am living for you
cause the life that you give me is wholesome"
finally represents the ending of the movie, where tom's character finally and truly, expresses his love for dorothy.
that's just my personal take.. i actually watched jerry maguire for the 3rd time, about an hour and a half before posting this. anyways, greatttt song! looking forward to future stuff from criteria.
