Well I think this song may be about himself. David is said to be an athiest. I can certainly respect the position.
The chords changes "are" truly wonderful in this song. I think they deserve to be so, because David is writing one of his personal anthems here. (Or maybe he wrote it for me ;-)
But I do think he is contemplating the fleeting, but wonderful existence we share right here, right now on planet Earth, and not assuming much else.
