It sounds like surrendering emotional attachment, or even the capacity to become attached, in the name of avoiding messy, human anguish. Or not even that maybe, but a song from the perspective of someone who is trying to rid themselves of emotional dependence. I can't really articulate why I think this but the difference between an eraser and a razor is that an eraser leaves its subject cleaner than before and a razor, properly applied, just makes things messy, which leads me to believe, along with the last line "hurt--the necessary feeling," that he doesn't ever accomplish his goal, for better.
