The first verse reads to me like he's playing the part of Smith, an assassin, or a silencing machine. This fits with the vision of the follow-up Replicas, and he was obviously using some of that imagary here.
Also, the name "Mr Smith" combined with the subject matter reminds me very much of the Matrix movies, made over 20 years later.
