Now that he's getting older, he's realizing as he looks back on his life that maybe the reason he is unhappy is BECAUSE he never settled down, never let anyone love him or let himself love anyone. I think he is realizing that he needs that love. I could be totally wrong on this, but looking at it in that context, it seems to make sense to me.
