"faceless civil servant" or the other extreme of someone who has removed themselves completely from society "a rudimentry crack whore." "Give them something to die for" is like syaing give them a purpose, give them a mind and some passion to care about something, and the final line of the chorus "give me something to die for" is a critique of himself and how even he can be as apathetic as the people he is singing about.
