i've had the same circumstance as everyone else concerning when this song hit their deepest feelings - over a break up.
a clear indication of this "break up" scenario in the song is "you said always and forever" which, when i heard this, i pictured myself saying the same thing almost echoing it like he does in the song when it happened to me.
the only thing is, i originally thought it was meant to be about his sister and her death. how he was grieving during that time. that he was battling between acceptance (hence the devil and angel references).
but that's the thing with dave's songs, they mean so many different things to so many different people.
