I think it's about what happened that led to breaking up. Who did what, who's fault is it. Pointing fingers at each other. Bad communication leads to misunderstandings, and two interpretations of "what happened". Things they didn't say to each other stays on their minds, wondering about the "what if". In the song he sings about him not caring anymore about what the other person thinks, he has his interpretation which probably is very different from the other person. But he doesn't care and that's all there is to it.
