I mean... look at the band--they've never really felt the need to fit in the mainstream. To me, this song is about all those who lie to themselves about who they are, especially when coupled with the lines "don't let on if you can't find your way," "Close your eyes, look away now, make believe while you can." It is also, in turn, very cynical and condescending in tone as seen through lines such as, "for your own good we'll take you by the hand," which makes me think of a child being led across the street, or a crowded room. Not a very strong image, hence the point of the song.
