i beleive that stripes on fire are the lies hes seeing come out of his lovers mouth... they blind him like sunshine and then later in the song he references im troubled or maybe im blind... i jsut think its how his lover lies to him and he escapes it by drinking and forgetting and keeps on trying to lvoe her...
I'd have to agree with you about "stripes on fire" being a metaphor for lies from his lover's mouth. I also feel that "these hands are tired" might be referring to how tired he is of covering his mouth instead of letting what he truly needs to say come out. Truly brilliant!
