I LOVE this song. It is such a beautiful song to perform and hear.
I figured it might have to do with a dark grain alcohol? becoming inebriated and slowing life down to the crawl of a black river, letting it become his saviour.
yet maybe he would consider suicide in the middle of the night in a dark river, letting it take him, his cares, his bottle (which he tried), his bible (which he sought), and his mess that he was trying to escape away.
this is kind of solidified by his lament "woah sweet whiskey, lord, you're gone." it's all gone now from his "saviour" all he is left with is his whiskey and his death
