This is an extremely powerful song....38 Special are an amazing band (often not appreciated properly I think), and this is a fine example of how great they are.
We've all (presumably) been in a relationship that went sour because of something we've said, an action we made, or a poorly-made choice to end it without a proper view of the consequences.
This song is clearly about that...it's about a relationship which ended either by a mistake or intentional choice by the 'main character' (ie. singer), after which the main character realized that they had real love and just threw it away. "Back where you belong" could be seen as being back in the relationship.
The singer realizes his/her error, and decides to make an effort to right their wrong(s) ("ain't gonna let it slip away").
Overall, this is a simply amazing song...if you liked this, I recommend Don't Stop Believin' by Journey...almost everyone has heard it, but few people realize how deep the lyrics actually are. Give it a shot, try listening with the lyrics open and you'll see.
