So maybe he kept taking the fall for everything and it made him look bad so other people would stay away from him (take a few steps back.) His ailment is he's a bad kid at school (text book infection) who's sick of it and wants to get out?
The whole push the detonator part is maybe him transforming himself in a way? I still don't really get this. But the garden of broken friendships could be him leaving the friends who gave him the image of the black sheep? Idk
