I find it strange that no one interpreted "all the while, the good lord smiled, and looked the other way" as an act of forgiveness on the part of Jesus. No matter how far we stray, the gift of Christ's mercy and forgiveness is always available to us. If we accept, Jesus will "ignore" our shortcommings and sins, so to speak.
