ok first of all take it from a former drug addict this song is definatly about drugs.. its totally about coke more than anything though, certain pieces of the song could be used in reference to other drugs as well and have the discription fit, but anyone who does coke or has done coke knows that thats exactly what the song is about. i know many people with experiences similar to this song, think about it..
ill break down the lyrics so you see what i mean
I heard you fell into a rabbit hole
Covered yourself up in snow
Baby, tell me, where'd you go
For days and days?
^
first off coke turns you into a shady person so when you fall into rabbit hole you fall off the face of the earth to go to [a drug house, or whenever you do your lines] and do so much blow that you dont want to go home because all you wanna do is keep doing more lines. thats what coke does, it turns you into a pheind and makes you disapear from your family, your kids, your significant other, or whoever it is that cares about you just to go on drug binges for days
Did they make you stay up all night?
Did they paint your face that pastey white?
You're thirsty but your appetite
Gets chased away
^
coke obviously keeps you speeded out of your face all night and he asks it in a question form in almost a mocking way. the pastey white could have to do with the color of yay in itself but i think its more about the actualy color of your face. not only do you get crazy bags under your eyes that shows you haven't slept in days but your face actually does turn pastey and you lose a lot of color (thats why all these movie stars tan 7 days a week) because it makes you look sick. when you do blow you cant eat and youre always thirsty.
Sun turns us to stone
It's a cloudy day
But we still can't go home
I've been out that cellar door
Until we see the moon
We're invisible
^
this parts pretty deep, but what i get from it is that when the sun finally comes up after a night of coquaine binging you freeze because you almost don't realize that you've been up all night so you contemplate on going home, but your usually comming down at this point so its night but grey clouds and skies because you feel like shit, then you decide that you cant go home because you don't want to deal with you problems in real life so instead you stick around to hide out and do more drugs. the cellar part is saying he's gone outside and saw the sun, but decided that he isnt leaving where he is until night when the moons out (usually to sneak home trying to go un-noticed)
No one ever takes the garbage out
A neighbor kid gets dared to touch the house
He runs back only to announce
"There's no one home"
^
this part is mostly symbolism think, no one takes the garbage out means that you just stop caring about things you should, the simple things that help us live happily everyday. i think the neighbor kid and the house represents somone you know [parents, friends, kids, siblings] looking for you at the places they think you'd be, and looking in all hte wrong places, because its not where you are.
Because we paint the foil with the flame
Smear the soda, taste butane
For every fear that can't be named
To calm you down
^
after you do enough of any drug you build up tolerance to it so that it just doesnt effect you the same way anymore, so i believe that whoever hes talking about did so much yayo that they were almost imune to it that the only thing that can fill your cravings for coke would be crack (because it's made of coke, and its much much cheaper) and this is how you calm yourself down when youre thinking about your problems and phiening to do your drugs. you chase away your fears and disapointment and sorrow with drugs.
Your heart starts skipping steps
So you're farther gone
Than you might expect
If your thoughts should turn to death
Gotta stomp them out
Like a cigarette
^
i dont tihnk this means that youre hearts litterally skippin steps, i think its just saying that its been so long and youre finally realizing how badly addicted you are or ever even expected to be. then next step after addiction is honestly death because theres no where else to go when you have such a bad habbit. so i tihnk the last part
"If your thoughts should turn to death
Gotta stomp them out
Like a cigarette "
means that when you finally see how bad you are, you gotta depend on yourself to fix things..
my last little analysis of the song is about the dark sound to the music and the song in general, it has an almost depressing sound, and thats the main reason why i tihnk its about coke instead of speed because speed reminds me of techno and upbeatness and as much as coke speeds you up, its anything but upbeat. its more of a downer because it makes you completely depressed overall more so when youre comming down from it. so yeah conor oburst is amazing. i love bright eyes
