Hmm... I haven't heard of Sleeper; I have this song off Elvis Costello's "All This Useless Beauty."
I love this song; it's so sweet and so sad. I've been in this situation, when two people care about one another but realize the relationship is failing.
They both want everything to work, and have tried to repair things before ("I thought we had it sorted / Out the other day"), they secretly blame themselves for whatever's going wrong ("What did I do wrong?"), but the worst part is, they don't know what that even is ("No one told me it was raining").
They still care about one another; "reaching for each other's hands," and that they're each terrified of the other person leaving. But they know they're doomed, and both of them can say "I'll miss you every day of your life."
Someone tries to make a decisive action ("Tore up all your photos") but regrets it because he/she still cares about the other person ("didn't feel too clever"). They each try to come up with concrete reasons for why things are failing ("Is there someone else? Or am I too familiar? / Was it when I said I wanted to have children?"), but the truth is, there isn't any real, preventable reason. These things just happen, sometimes...
That's what I take from this song. You can look at it either way, as either depressing or comforting. It's sad to think that two people can, despite best intentions and best attempts, fall apart like this. But... it's also kind of comforting to think about this if you've been in the same boat; to know that some things inevitably collapse helps you avoid those "What-ifs" and feelings of guilt that can drive you insane.
...Phew. That was long-winded. Aside from all that, why don't more people comment on this song? It's gorgeous!
