The song has deep religious value to me. When he says "you're beating with a book everyone that book tells you to love,
there is an ember in the heart of the kiln and its burning hot with love,
burning out my center till there's nothing but dust,
rolling me with care into your cigarette,
'cause the God i believe in never worked on a campaign trail."
It sounds to me like he's rebuking hypocritical Christians(or any religion for that matter) for cursing sinners and "beating with a book everyone that book tells you to love". It's obviously the Bible that he's talking about. And when he says "cause the God i believe in never worked on a campaign trail" he's not comparing politicians to idols that are worshipped, but rather, he's upset that politicians try to use religion as a foothold to get votes.
