Kezia reflects her past while jailed.

"Kezia, my darling, please never forget this world's got the substance of a frozen summer silhouette," Said my mother through lips that were cracked with love and toil before she added, "the warmest of blankets is six feet of soil"

Kezia recalls a moment where her mother speaks to her. Her mother obviously did not hold the world in very high regard because she says the only comfort you can find is death.

"She had a perfume called Pride that smelled a lot more like Shame When she walked into the room I was sleeping, heard her curse my father's name; It was our situation, our position, our gender to blame It was the lonely grey of my father's eyes staring back in the mirror's frame"

I interpret their society to be very patriarchal from this verse. "She had a perfume called Pride that smelled a lot more like Shame" Kezia's mother tries to stand up for what is deserved by women everywhere, but ultimately accomplishes nothing and is just a talker. She hates her husband for being male and probably didn't marry out of 100% free will.

"Mother, I'm shaking while I write because tonight I'll stay awake and breathe away my fright There's a letter waiting for me that I have yet to read because I know it won't be you And you're the only one I need, I'm tired and I'm cold and I want to go to bed But there's non one here to tuck me in, so the shotgun will instead"

Kezia professes her need for her mother. I believe Kezia committed her "crime" because of the beliefs her mother passed onto her and thusly needs her mother more than anyone when she is about to die. In this verse, Kezia adapts the cynical attitude of her mother and loses hope.

I like this song because we got to learn a bit about Kezia's past and what caused her to rebel. I think this song teaches us that we all have to fight oppression to achieve freedom. I don't think many of us will face such extreme examples as Kezia, but hopefully we can learn to be less submissive in our lives and live how we deserve.
