That could be it, but the "scales" parts dont really make sense to me. I'd say it would be scales as in the musical definition. Maybe he feels like (or feels like people see him as) a "giant" (not in size, of course, but as in a giant musical success) because of the rising popularity of his music. He writes his songs ("scales"), and watch them be distributed throughout his fans and the music world until it hardly seems like his anymore. Also, maybe the "scales become heavy" to him because his music is so personal, and so playing it over and over can be overbearing. Makes total sense to me, but I could easily be reading too much into it.
