Ok this might not make sesne to anyone, but the other day I had a ephiany while listening to this song. Ok how it starts out with John lived a lie, I think it's about this guy who puts on an act about what he really is. He's tired of be something he's not and that's where the "if you want to know the truth about my life it's a wreck, mess, sham, scam, and so on". And the "where did my friends go?" I inturpt that as being that when he tells the truth his "friends" don't want anything do with him since he's not who they thought he was.
