To me, it feels like the song is about somebody who has definitely gone through something to distance herself from the world, but instead of trying to heal herself she uses this as an excuse to be even more cut off. So she isn’t understood by the people around her “everyone's got a theory about the bitter one”, she doesn’t trust them while she doesn’t always have the reason not to, and at the same time she isn’t making enough effort to make any of this better. “And reaching out for human faith is like a journey I just don't have a map for" So in her world, she sits and waits “hanging all her hopes on the stars” for the magical presence to come and take her away from this place she supposedly doesn’t belong. (“what a pleasant dream”)
