i believe this song might have been inspired by oppressive societies in places like darfur, afghanistan, etc. the story itself, to me, tells of a specific young girl who's suffered tremendously but gathered enough bravery within herself--despite the pain of recalling those memories--to speak publicly about her adversities, resulting in public knowledge and rescue efforts to help other girls.

"in a land far away where the sun doesn't spare a soul"-- i imagine across seas, and in the desert

"and the twisted traditions have a girl in a stranglehold"-- certain religious and social practices that, as a result, are oppressive toward women

"when you shared the secret with the world, you saved another mother's child"-- her speaking out spread knowledge
