I've always thought he was singing about that light you're supposed to see right before you die. It could make sense cause he sings that "It's the last thing that you'll ever see" and there's a few other lines that fits in pretty well to my theory. ie he sings about running out of time, and that you "might be free or freer than you've ever been.
