I didn't know that this song was written for the movie but that makes perfect sense.
It relates perfectly to what brian said.
"Will you call my name, or just walk on by?"
Brian talked about how he considered them as friends after that day and asked when they were back at school with all their friends from different cliques would they say hi? or just ignore each other?
And besides that this song fit the movie. especially in the end when the principle is reading Brian's note.
