Beautiful song. There's not much that tops Townes Van Zandt in terms of songwriting. He's one of my favorites, and someone that I wish I would have gotten to see live and in person. I find it interesting that there are only a few posts/comments concerning Townes' songs. Guess it goes to show that the majority of people don't know a good thing, don't know what good music is, and don't understand the good life. Maybe that's the way it's supposed to be. People tend to screw stuff up anyway.
To me, this is a great love song, about two people who have such a strong bond and feel an intense loyalty to one another that they'd make the ultimate sacrifice if necessary. Love songs are a dime a dozen, but Townes' writing is full of creativity and makes an old subject seem new and fresh. Emmylou Harris and Don Williams did a duet of this song, and it does justice to Townes' writing. Emmylou's voice adds a sweetness to this emotionally-dreanched song, and Don Williams sounds like an experienced, wise man that everyone pays attention to.
