angel_wired, consider the words. Taken literally, they say that it's very little wonder that 'he' killed himself, if only just to shut up the voices of the army of 'devils' in his life/mind telling him to do the same. Alcohol doesn't shut them out, though it does a better job than most things. The last stanza is the marching song of the demons, the endless chant that he couldn't escape from.

Anyway, it's uplifting because the tone of the piece is saying: it doesn't matter, it doesn't matter, it doesn't matter. There isn't a point, so it doesn't matter. So, no reason to cry, and no reason not to cry.

It's celebrating the transition: "One stops a'living, one goes about a'dying"

And at the end, the underlying chant of the "demons" is articulated, and you get a glimpse of the why. The entire song is set to something like that chorus, and it's just an expression of grief and regret, but never surprise.
