you guys are all looking at the song as if its happening as he writes it..but everything he does is in pass-tense
personally, i think him and his girlfriend just broke up (obviously) but its not their last night together hes writing about..he's reminiscing on the nights he spent with her..and what she put him through, "keep me hanging in suspence". so he remembers what he would do just to see her and be with her for the time he could. but hes coming to the fact that shes just a memory and as his thinking of her and drinking away the memorys.. he hopes shes doing the same
and i honestly, i relate to this song 100% so thats where i get my views from =/
