It's exactly that, he's taking a second walk down the street of fame - not his second chance with RHCP but with the gift of making music and saving his life by coming off heroin. By singing "I've been a meal of mine and slid down my throat" is a metaphor for eating himself up with drugs - "died so many times and then re-appeared" got high, got low. But then he realised "Death is just a word that causes fear" Realised there was more to life, that he could enjoy life, hence the lyrics "I'm taking my place in a world with different space!"
