I love the way this song mixes an inherently unhappy subject with such a playful timbre. On one hand we have sombre lyrics like:

  • "It's raining again"
  • "My love's at an end"
  • "I'm losing a friend"
  • "It's only time that heals the pain"

But this is contrasted with a childlike sense of naivity:

  • The upbeat tempo
  • The playful saxophone and xylophone throughout
  • Childlike lyrics, like "And makes the sun come out again" and "C'mon, you little fighter"
  • The teasing melody at the end of the accordian's solo
  • The background vocals at the end, reciting the nursery rhyme "It's raining, It's pouring, The old man's snoring..."

This song reminds me of my placement with Year 1s (age 5-6) during my teacher training.

Very good observation. I think the song's success was justly it: the contrast of lyric and instrumental elements, the union of the opposites. It's a simple and effective formula to the success.
