My guess is that it is a reference to one of Matthew Good's (and mine) favorite novels: Hard-Boiled Wonderland & the End of the World by Haruki Murakami.
In it there is a scientist who discovers that all bones emit sounds, and with this discovery is able to turn up and down the volume of all things.
