To me this song is about the bitterness you feel when someone, whether it be a friend or a boyfriend/girlfriend drops your friendship.
After he realizes that the petty bullshit they add to his life is just holding him down, he ends the relationship, no longer caring about salvaging the friendship. Even though the person will try and back themselves up, they can never take back the words they said. I think the gift was the fact that he cared about the relationship he had with that person. He lets them know that even though they think they're better off now, he'll be there saying "told you so", when they realize how good of a friend he was to them.
