Cover art for Elegy lyrics by As I Lay Dying

I had listened to this song for a long time and loved it despite the fact that I hadn't really been listening to the lyrics. Once I looked them up this song became one of my all time favorites.

This song is in fact an Elegy (Webster describes it as "A song or poem expressing sorrow or lamentation especially for one who is dead.") for someone who was close to the vocalist that had passed away. The way he describes this person makes me wish I knew them. When he says "Did you ever see me or could you even see at all" I think it was him saying how this person couldn't have actually seen who he was, or anyone for that matter because of how the person always gave carefree unrestricted love, even to those who didn't necessarily deserve it just because it was how they were.

When he says "It was the carefree unrestricted love that you never meant to give. You never had the choice. It was your innocence. It was a part of who you were." it says to me that this person was so innocent that they would give their carefree unrestricted love without even having tried to, it just flows out of them uncontrollably because it's just a part of who they were.

How could you ever replace someone in your life this special?
