I saw the song to be a bit more like a story. In the beginning, Annie and the speaker are together. She's depressed. They get in a fight and he leaves. But even after he leaves he's still making sure she's okay and wants her to be safe. "Looking through the paper today, looking for a specific page. I don't want to find her full name followed by dates." If they were together the entire time, he wouldn't have to look through the paper to make sure she's okay. I like the second half of the song a lot where it goes back and forth from the "Annie says" verses and the chorus. It's kind of like a conversation. Annie is listing off all her problems and all he can say is "things will get better" because he really can't say anything more. At the end of the song, he realizes he wants to really be there for her, which is that last part of the song. Finally after explaining for the umpteenth time that things will get better with time, he says that he'll always be there for her reguardless of her problems and he'll be the one who "makes it clear she doesn't need to solve them." I don't think he exactly saved her at the end, it doesn't really give an answer to if she died or not.. but what it does answer is that they're together and he is going to be there for her.
