I never had the slightest clue what this song was about until just recently.

The forty hour increments represent the typical work week, in which the corporations oppress their minimum-wage employees. Save yourself, or you'll be murdered, and subsequently (of your being murdered) they'll fill your chair, forgetting of your sitting there. They'll replace you without a thought, because we're just tools to them. The last verse is pretty self explanatory with this context in mind.
